Isaiah 64:6-8 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities. But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

These verses portray man as he really is -- unclean, our works and good deeds are filthy rags, we are weak and wither and fade as a leaf, because of our sin and inequities we are separated from God.  Notice how utterly depraved man is -- there is none, no one, nobody that calls on the name of the Lord, that stirs himself up to take hold of Him.  Now you may be thinking of Romans 10:13 where it says "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.", but notice how these verses state it.  No one stirreth up himself.  We cannot 'will' ourselves to take hold of God.  We cannot 'will' ourselves to call upon the name of the Lord.

The Lord is the potter, we are the clay and He is the one who draws us to Himself; we are the work of His hand.  Oh how sinful we are, how depraved, how utterly helpless; yet the Lord in His great power reaches down and saves us.  God is truly the author and finisher of our faith. (Heb 12:2)
