One of my favorite verses is 1 Corinthians 2:2 "For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified." The apostle Paul wanted nothing more then to have the people understand Jesus, who He was and what He accomplished on the cross. It was the most important event in history and is the only way anybody can go to heaven. St. Augustine in his book 'The City of God' said that same thing. "Whoever has Christ in his heart, so that no earthly or temporal things -- not even those that are legitimate and allowed -- are preferred to Him, has Christ as a foundation. But if these things be preferred, then even though a man seem to have faith in Christ, yet Christ is not the foundation to that man, since for him, other things come before Christ." Today so many do not have Christ as the foundation; too many other things are mixed in (even good things) that take away from true faith in Christ alone. 1 John 5:11-13 says "God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life." John wrote a letter to Christians telling them how they can know for sure that they have eternal life. If they believe in the name of the Son of God they have eternal life. This means that if we have faith in Christ alone and what He did for us on the cross, God has given us eternal life. It's not something we've earned but is a gift from God. So when someone asks me if I know I'm going to heaven, I can with confidence say "Yes!" And when they ask me why, I respond with "God has granted me the gift of eternal life. Christ is my foundation and Christ died for my sin on the cross. In Christ alone I trust for my salvation, there is nothing I can do because Jesus did it all and offers it to me as a gift." Ephesians 2:8-9 "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast." We all need the foundation of Christ, and Christ alone
